Xbox Head Predicts ‘The Elder Scrolls VI’ Release to be at Least Five Years Away
During day two of the hearing where the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is seeking an injunction to block Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Phil Spencer, the chief of Microsoft’s Gaming division, revealed that The Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced five years ago at E3 2018, is still “five-plus years away” from potential release.
“I think we’ve been a little unclear on what platforms it will be released on, given how far along the game is. It’s hard for us right now to nail down exactly what platforms the game will be released on,” Spencer said in response to an inquiry by an FTC attorney, as reported by IGN . “Like I said with Elder Scrolls VI, it’s so far away that it’s hard to understand what the platforms are at this point. It’s the same team that’s finishing Starfield, which comes out in September. So we’re talking about probably more than five years away. “
If you’ve been following Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls VI news, the game’s distant release date won’t come as a surprise. In 2020, Pete Hines, the publisher’s director of marketing and communications, said that Bethesda wouldn’t have anything substantial to share about the title for a few more years. “It’s after Starfield, which you know next to nothing about,” he tweeted at the time. “So if you’re asking me for details now and not years from now, I won’t be able to properly manage your expectations.” Based on Spencer’s comments, The Elder Scrolls VI may skip the current generation of consoles entirely. Last week, Bethesda Game Studios creative director Todd Howard said that Elder Scrolls VI “could be the last game of his career.”
